Helping Children Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

Our team welcomes children of all ages to a friendly and supportive dental environment in Cornwall. We understand that every child responds differently to new experiences, which is why we take the time to explain each step, answer questions and move at a pace that feels comfortable.

Our goal is not only to care for your child’s teeth. We also want to help build positive dental habits and reduce fear from an early age.

Shelley

Our Children’s Program Treatment Coordinator

Shelley has worked with children of all ages for more than 28 years, including patients as young as one and children entering their teenage years.

Her priority is to establish trusting relationships with both children and parents. By helping young patients become familiar with the dental environment, Shelley supports a calmer and more positive experience before, during and after treatment.

Every child is unique, so our approach is personalized around their comfort level, personality and previous dental experiences.

Time to Ask Questions and Build Confidence

When appropriate, we reserve approximately 50 to 60 minutes for a child’s visit. This allows the appointment to feel calm and unhurried.

The additional time gives children an opportunity to:

  • Become familiar with the treatment room
  • Meet the dental team
  • Ask questions
  • Understand what will happen
  • Take breaks when needed
  • Feel recognized as an individual

When Should My Child Start Seeing a Dentist?

Baby teeth play an important role in eating, speech development and guiding permanent teeth into position. Although these teeth will eventually fall out, children may keep some of them until around age 12.

Early dental visits allow our team to monitor development, identify concerns and help parents establish healthy routines before problems become more difficult to manage.

Parents are also encouraged to bring young children along to appropriate family dental appointments. Becoming familiar with the sights, sounds and people in a dental office can help make their own future visits feel more normal and less intimidating.

Adopt-A-Pal: A Cornwall Dental Arts Tradition

Since 1992, our Adopt-A-Pal program has helped make dental visits more exciting for young patients.

Through this longstanding Cornwall Dental Arts tradition, children may have the opportunity to enter a draw for a stuffed animal prize. Over the years, it has been wonderful to see previous participants grow up and return with families of their own.

Ask our team about the current Adopt-A-Pal program and how your child can participate.

Common questions

FAQ

When should my child first see a dentist?

Earlier than many parents expect. Baby teeth guide permanent teeth into place and support speech and eating, so early visits help us monitor development and catch concerns sooner. Our team has experience welcoming children as young as one.

How can I prepare my child for a dental visit?

Keep the conversation positive and simple. Avoid sharing your own dental fears, and consider bringing your child to an appropriate family appointment first so the office feels familiar. Our team will explain each step in child-friendly language.

What happens during a child’s first appointment?

First visits are usually light and encouraging: becoming comfortable in the chair, counting teeth, a gentle look around the mouth and a cleaning when your child is ready. Parents are welcome throughout.

What if my child is nervous?

That is common — and expected. We slow the pace, explain what is happening and take breaks when needed. Longer appointments, when appropriate, give nervous children more room to settle in. Ask us about comfort options that may help.

Do you offer fluoride treatments?

Yes, when appropriate for your child’s age and cavity risk. We will recommend fluoride as part of a personalized prevention plan.

Do you treat cavities in baby teeth?

Yes. Decay in baby teeth can affect comfort, chewing and the adult teeth developing underneath. We treat cavities gently and explain options clearly to parents.

How long is a children’s dental appointment?

We typically reserve about 50 to 60 minutes so the visit feels calm and unhurried. Exact timing depends on your child’s needs and the care planned for that day.

Can parents remain with their child?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay and support their child during the visit.

How does the Adopt-A-Pal program work?

Adopt-A-Pal is a Cornwall Dental Arts tradition that has helped make visits more exciting for young patients since 1992. Ask our team about how children can participate in the current program.
